I'm really glad to see some Sec 4s still taking care of the fishes in the club house.
This few months, I have been trying to settle the administrative stuff so as to let the Sec 4s step down earlier & letting the Sec 3s take over.
Sorry for this long period of unenthuness, because your advisor & most of the executive committee is busy with their CCA.
I hope to finish everything before prelim. So I do hope for your cooperation, esp the exco.

Outing todae was not so good. Went to a few fish shops but none sold any fish tt we wanted to buy. In the end, bought 35 rummy nosed tetras for $22. Price is alrite lah. Not tt ex (around market price for 1).
Planning another trip some days next few weeks.

ADMISSION PASS

This is a reminder that the ADMISSION PASS is done. Most likely, it will be issued to the students either this week or next week.
The admission passes are catagorised like this:
1)Exco Member
2)Secondary Member
3)Secondary Student
There are three different positions, hence different colours are given.
Exco member can permenantly keep the pass as long as he/she is still a member of the school. Exco member must keep in mind that these cards cannot be lent to anyone else, only to himself/herself can use it.
Exco member can choose to/not to put their names on the cards, however it will be temporary as the cards will be pass down to the next comittee.
Exco members will have access to the SECONDARY MEMBER pass.
If neccessary, an Exco member can lent the SECONDARY MEMBER pass to any of the secondary comittee.
It is a must to take good care of the cards, especially not abusing the rights of cards.
ADVISOR will have full access to the ALL passes.
If neccessary, the ADVISOR can lent the SECONDARY STUDENT pass to anyone to draw the keys to the SRC.
He/She will the position to issue or detain the cards from anyone.
It is a reminder that the person in possession of the SECONDARY STUDENT/MEMBER pass must return the pass to either the ADVISOR or Exco Member when unused.
Last thing, please do make some time to check on the fishes, cleaniness of the tanks and area around them. And try not to overfeed the fishes.

If a SECONDARY STUDENT abuse the usage of the admission card, the ADVISOR will be blamed.

Duty in the Holidays

though holidays are coming to an end, i still need ppl to come to school to check the fish. I don have the time and money to call everyone up to 'force' them to go. So far, Yong Ann and i had been checking the fish. Not sure of the rest. If u did come to school for any purposes, u can go and find ms lu if she is around to open the SRC for u. If not, u can always sms me and i can go to school and help u retrieve the keys.

Today at about 3pm, i went to feed the fish. As the autofeeders are down, i need to feed the fish affected manually. At the same time, i also need to feed the fighting fish and the guppies.

Today, at about 3pm, Yong Ann and i went to the SRC to check the fish. This is the report card:
All the auto feeder of the tank except for the paludairum, and AMAZON BASIN tank are infested with maggots. The food are top up for paludarium and AMAZON BASIN while for those that are infested, i've manually fed the fish. Surprisingly, the fish in the SEA Stream looks ok now and the snails had disppear. Perhaps they are hiding somewhere. We made a 100% water change for the breeder guppy. At the same time, i've removed the guppy fry in the wild guppy tank. There are a total of 7 baby guppys. 1 fighting fish was dead. The jar was washed up. Yong Ann had also change the water for the other two fighting fish. To stimulate the fighting fish to breed, or to condition them, ive add some pH down, peat extract and black water liquid. Don't know how much to add, just estimated. We also tested the water to ensure the hardness and pH of the water for the fighting fish are ok. i've also added some cabomba taken from the overgrowing AMAZON BASIN for the guppy fry and the fighting fish. As a result, i've put a light on top of the containers in order for the cabomba to photosynethese. I've also added some coral chips, taken from the LAKE MALAWI for the breeder guppy and the guppy fry. Said to be able to stabalise the water for the guppy. Of course, we also added the declorinator but not sure hjow much to put. Just press 2 times for each pail of water. The frogs are also fed with crickets. With the maggots, you all might consider feeding them to the frogs if you all mind me spending too much on the crickets. Maggots are nutritous food!

There will be a maintenance at 9am on 25th November 2005. All members are expected to help out. Main focus will be the SEA Stream Tank and the Australian River Tank. There are some kind of filtration problem in SEA Stream Tank, resulting in nitrite poisoning of the Tiger Barb. Algaes are all around and the tank are also infested with parasite snails. For the Australian River Tank, the plants are dying because there is no white light for photosynethesis.

Poor Management

I think problems that happened recently were all caused by poor management. Fishes that die most probably was caused by starvation, water poisoning and maybe the feeder got problem. I hope that anyone managing the tanks should pay more attention to the conditions of the tanks including layout, not just filling up of water. Hope to see better improvement in these tanks.

Today, at about 1.15pm, Dick, Darren, Xui Hao, Gabriel, me and a Sec 1 lad were in the SRC topping up the water.

Tank 1: SEA Stream
Algae infested, snail infested, filter problems, dead fish....... The tank is in trouble. The tiger barb are suffering from nitrite poisioning. This can be supported by the odd swimming where the barbs would swim with their head pointing to the ground. Looks like a maintenance is a must. The rosy barb and gourami were dead.

Tank 2: Lake Malawi
One cichlid was found dead below a rock. I've removed it. Now, there are only 6 cichlids left. Sigh...

Tank 3: Amazon Basin
Look good. Dick had propagate the overgrowing plants.

Tank 4: Paludarium
Nothing much. Then again, the food got stuck on the leaves.

Tank 5: Australian River
Nothing much. The plants are dying though. No white light.. no photosynethesis.

Breeder guppy
All the guppy are out of the 'cage'. I've shift the floats to ensure that the guppy would not escape again.

TANK UPDATE

Today, at about 4pm, i went to the SRC for a quick check on the fish as well as feeding the frogs. the water level of all tanks are too low and a top up should take place somewhere this week. at the same time, there is a dead rainbow fish in the Australian River. i've shifted the autofeeder of paludarium a little. (the food drop onto the leaves, stay there and rot). i'll shift the plant to ensure nothing like this will happen again in the next maintenace or topup. i've fed the breeder guppy. The food in the feeders should be able to last for at least this week.

TANK 1: SEA Stream
everything well and fine i think..

TANK 2: Lake Malawi
i 'count here count there' like gt 6 CICHLIDS only leh!! maybe i count wrongly...but monday u better go check

TANK 3: Amazon Basin

1 cory died, i tink quite long liao...the CARTILLAGE white colour...eyeball dug out..yuck...i didn't take it out...sry...i lazy.. the AUTOFEEDER left little bit food...i add little bit more flake...just enough 4 weekend...cause i dono isit shld b add that brand of flakes ornot ORNAMENTAL

TANK 4: Paludarium

sum of e plants leave yellow and i think one the leave little bit black at one part..like 'burnt' and hor u put the V shape plant under e autofeeder...all e food sticks drop onto e plant ...and get stuck there...so FUNGUS seems to be growing and the autofeeder left little bit sticks liao..i 4gt refill..pls refill

TANK 5: Australian River
sum of e fish hav TAILROT... and e autofeeder e food like 'too long' liao...stick to autofeeder...dono e food gt spoil ornot..so i changed e food...

GUPPY BREEDING TANK:
guppies all out of breeding net...nt e 1st time...and i dun think will b e last time:P:P so i lazy put them bac...better think of new design 4 e breeding trap.. and the guppies hav FINROT at their tails

WILD GUPPIES TANK:
e babies r growing...u might want to make the flake into smaller pieces 4 e baby guppy to eat...just roll them between ur hands.. and tat tank no air pump..so poor thing E SMALL TANKS OF FISHTING FISHES IN FRONT OF E WILD GUPPY TANK: look so poor thing...hope they r all right...they veri frightened lik that...u all never cover ah..will they jump out?...and those no autofeeder...so pls remember to feed them when u r thr...

Good Job done by EcoAquaria members!

Everyone, days passed the EcoAquaria first ever fund raising project. With the coorperation and the help of all members and sponsors, I am glad to announce that EcoAquaria had made a great profit from this fund raising event, de-Aqua Euphoria held on 26th and 27th of October 2005.

1)Coupons.
All blue coupons and some white coupons are sold for the fund raising event. We eventually thought there would still be plenty left.

2)Business
Business for both days were splendid. It was poorer on the 2nd day as the day's customers consists of mostly sec 2s and 3s. However, our business thrived on the first day. Great Job done.

3)Members
Most members had participated actively in helping out in this event(although some are 'slacking',lol. These members had made the whole event successful. Thanks alot

4)Sponsors. Thanks for all teachers who adopted the fishes. We would also like to thank Mr Teo Seck Tuan for his kind donation for EcoAquaria. We would also like to thank Mrs Maria Koh for the fishes needed.

TANK UPDATE

Today, after my O levels paper, i went to the SRC to feed the frogs. I've fed more than enough and those crickets should last for a week or so. Dick, Xui Hao and Darren was there before, but not too sure if they are there to check the fish. Tomorrow is Deepavali and Thursday is hari Raya. So, i dont think ms lu will be in school. noone will be going to school also. Most probably, i 'll go on wednesday to have a check while yong ann will go on friday.

Kheng Kia will be coming to school on Monday, Tuesday and Friday for his CCA. He had agreed to check the fish for November.

Yong Ann will be coming on Friday.

Members who are in NCC will also check the fish when they come for CCA. Yi He will be in charge of informing the other members in NCC.

Members who are in band will also check the fish. I’ve ask Aron and Dick to remind the other members. Maybe, you can also help me to remind them.

I’ll be coming on Wednesday to feed the frogs. It is my day off.

As no one has the ID card, I need ms lu to help you all retrieve the key. You all are to inform me before hand about the time you are coming. Then i'll sms ms lu to confirm

Food problems!!

I wan to bring up this problem with the food in the feeder. As everyone knows, the food in the feeder became detriotes after sometimes, attracting the mites. And it looks digusting. First, i read that fish food containing high protein will detriotes after exposing to the air. Maybe it is the minerals and vitamins that detriotes. Maybe it's oxidation or reduction. If u all are observant, u would realised that the left over food at the bottom of the food containers contain powdery stuff. Those are actually detroitated food. and together with the moisture in the air, the food rot and became even more disgusting. The food will rot and attract mites. Noone dare to clean it up, including me. Even when someone clean it, the problem come again. It never stops. At first, i thought it was the water that rot the food. It could be the reason for the paludarium because of the spray, but shouldn't for the other tanks. Most importantly, i wasnt sure this food are healthy to eat. Chemical reactions might change the properties of the food. What if it became toxic? Then, it would be disastrous.

Solution? First we must keep the food real DRY to prevent it from rotting. For the detriotation of the food, i think we can only put small bit of food each time so that less food will be wasted by detriotation. If anyone has other ideas, do tell me.

I personally want to thank ms lu for helping us to feed the fish and frogs during the exams.

Today, after the paper, we went to top up the water for paludarium, lake malawi and the amazon tank. The paludairum had almost dried up. The lily in the paludairum are also covering the water surface and light cannot reach the other bottom plants. So dick had also cut some.

Dick and yong Ann are starting on their breeding program of guppies. Hope that they would succeed.

That's all for now. We still have a chinese paper to go.

Last friday, after school, most of the members were in the SRC, supposingly to help in topping up the water which will take place every two weeks. After all, i think only a few helped. Fishes look ok. But the feeder for the Amazon seemed to have problems. Even when i had changed new batteries, they don't seemed to work..

The new Australian River looks really cool with the Arcadic Blue Light. But, i think most of the fish don't belongs to Australian Rivers. The rainbowfish couldnt be specifically identified. But for sure, the Pictus Catfish don't belongs. It belongs to the Amazon. Also, the 2 gobys, susposed to be SLEEPER GOBY comes from SEA.

Today, i went to the SRC. Most members were there too. I had brought slices of carrot for the crickets. These were used to breed crickets. Crickets will laid eggs in the carrots which will provides sufficient moisture for the off spring. of course, all fish were fed. One problem: the filter for the paludarium seemed to have problems. Dick managed to make it work but he said there's something wrong. I also don noe... Anyway, he also reminded me to trim the plants in the AMAZON. Also, algae are growing in the SEA Stream tank. They had to be removed. I'll do that on next Monday where all the EXCO will meet. That's all. Teachers' Day is coming. Wish every teacher a happy teachers' day!

Today, after school, i went to the SRC. Ms lu and some other sec 2 IPW students were there cleaning up the place. i went there to feed the frogs with my new-brought crickets. Then, i check the other tank. All tanks are manual fed. The feeders of SEA STREAM and LAKE MALAWI tanks were refilled. This also means that the TETRA BITS have completely used up. Algae are growing rapidly in the SEA STREAM. All fish looked okay. For the paludarium, the plants are growing well.

I'm writing to complain bout the inresponsibility of the quater master. he had not brought the batteries for the feeder and the fish were starving. At fist, he said he will buy it after the CA. Fair enough. i waited... Then, today, i demanded again and he said it was just after CA.. Must wiat. This is nonsense! Just after CA? Have not brought? i thought this time should have no excuse! I think he need to be more responsible as this will affect the health and life of the fish. We souldn wan to see the fish die..

During the recess, Yong Ann and i went to add the water in the paludarium. Fortunately, the water had not dry up completely. But, the filter was not working. After we had added the water, the filter was still not working. Fortunately, Dick came in help us with it.
yet, there are many things i need to adjust. For example, one of the api api putih is too large and it needs to be buried deeper. Also, the food in the feeder had finished. I had added some more TETRA BITS.

Others Tanks: The food in the feeder of both the S.E.A. STREAM and LAKE MALAWI had been contaminated. it had to be change and will be change soon. As a result, the affected the tank was manual fed by me. I realised that the cichilds in the LAKE MALAWI seemed to be hungry. I think they had not been feeding for days.

The Quatermaster had not given me any batteries for the feeder.

The crickets for frog had all died. I will buy new one tomorrow.

On monday, Dick, Kheng Kia and i went to SRC to check the animals. One major problem encountered:
THE PALUDARIUM IS DRYING UP!!!

Actually, i promised to add up the water after my CCA today. But, my cca ended so late at 5.30pm that the office had closed. I couldn retrieve the key. I hope it don't dry up completely or else the snails and the zebra danios will die.. I will add up after dismissal tomorrow.

Went to SRC today with Dick and Yong Ann after the physics paper. Here's some updates:

the food in the feeder of the LAKE MALAWI TANK is contaminated.
the crickets for the bullfrog had all died.
the mangrove plants in the paludarium are living.
as usual, the feeder for LAKE MALAWI and AMAZON is not working. the fish are hungry for days.. i've ordered some batteries from the quatermaster. should arrive after CA.
also, the CO2 for AMAZON is still not working.

Today, i added two Api Api Putih (mangrove plants) and a palm to the paludarium, hoping that it will thrive and prevent soil erosion. But because one of them are too high, i had removed the net. I had fed all the animals in all tanks. ( i had to manual feed for the amazon basin and lake malawi). Also, a cichild from the Lake Malawi died. Others are ok.

today, i was in the SRC feeding the bullfrogs with the newly brought crickets. these are some observation:

the feeders for the Amazon Basin and Lake Malawi are not working. I had to manual feed the fish.
the setting of the paludarium had changed. hopefully, the problem regarding the rotting food in the feeder will be solved
all fish look good. i observe that one of the runnynose in the Amazon Basin had blisters. Seems to be an infections or maybe, attacked by other fishes.
the red lobster died. on saturday it was removed from the paludarium and placed in a container. surprisingly, it died. lobster should be able to survive without air filter. maybe, the water is too dirty. haiz.... dick also said that he is not buying any lobster again.

Well! Look what you humans have done to our distant relatives { i think if they are big white sharks }. No no no. What horror has been unleashed by you humans. My distant distant relatives have been emailing to me stating that you all have been ill-treating them. Torturing them by starving them. Worse still, overfed them. My poor distant relatives. If this continues, I would have to complain you people to the MOE {Ministry of Ecofish, Singapore}. What do you think you humans are doing? Fish for Auction ? NOooo... We are fishes, we will fish you all. You fishes out there, What do you think we are? A mouse or a fishhh....?

Cleaning of Tank 3

On Saturday, 5 of March 2005, Dick and the other Group 3 members went to the SRC at 9am to clean up the tank.
This is what we had done:

clean the filter
wash the tank surfaces
check the fish's health
trim the plants
partially change of water

This is what we had observed:

the yamato* shrimps were nowhere to be seen. Only 1 was found near the wood. i predicted that they could have dug into the wod and not eaten by the other fish
most fish are healthy but there are few catfish and runnynose tetra are overfeed.
one of the cardinal tetra is sick. it seems to suffer from malnutritution and was bullied by the other fish members. It fins were torn and the colouration of its body had disappear. we moved it to a hospital tank so that it will not spread any diseases to the other fish
we realised that out of the two light bulb, only one is light up. The connector* of the other is loose and electric current cannot reach the bulb.

We had counted the number of fish: (if i didnt count wrongly)

19 cardinal tetra (including the sick one)

18 runnynose tetra

4 congo tetra

3 pink catfish*

4 black catfish*

3 discus

Of course, everyone worked hard and had fun. That's all for me.

Group 1 - Tank? Whatever!

Okay.. Seems that the secondary 1 are having their stuffs and the student leaders are occupying the SRC (Student Recreational Centre)... So, none of the Group members of any Groups to be looking at the fishes. Just hope that things will be alright and also, Group 1 members, please check on the fishes (If you can) or after the Secondary 1 thingy...

Okay.. It has been very very long since the last person posted a proper blog including Group 2 who was posting every now and than. But, now, it seems that XiuHao is not free. Perhaps with the Band brochure and Ex-co stuffs (which I think there is none), or his personal studies, he has stopped blooging for awhile. Whereas for Group 3, a little post from Dick saying "Hi" and "Finally he can post messages". While, showing that people in Ecology is veru busy. Ermm.. meaning busy studying lah! So, good mah! Okay, back to our Group - Group 1.

During the holidays, Group 1 has been going down to the tank quite often durings the November holidays but, December, well, group one members, you know for yourself. Okay, at least they all put in that little effort. So, thanks dude who has been popping down to take a look at the fishes.

Ermmm.. The tank for Group 1 is going on well smoothly.. Without fishing entering the other world. It is a good start for the holidays, leaving the automatic feeders the job of feeding the fishes and maintaining teh good health of our fishes. It seems that during feeding times or people walking nearby, teh fishes will follow.. Ahaha.. Maybe it is because to the well-maintaining of the tank (Nah. Nothing of that sort) So, in all, it is all working well!

Okay, Ms Lu's treat was due. The Group 1 people had their treat after a big discussion - SMS, talking, over the phone, blog etc.. All the up-dates were past down like this. Oh ya, at the same time as the Group 1 peopel has their treat which Ms Lu said it was not due top joining Ecology cause of the treat, BUT for the enjoyment and love for fishes. Okay, cut the crap. So, on the same day, Group 4 the new Group of water and land tank people also joined in as they were cleaning the old tank filled with... (I also don't know what!) Though the filter for the tank is spoiled. Wonder when we will make a trip down to claim/exchange?

Group 1 has also popped by the tank in the December holidays as they had to claer the tanmk of algae - making the tank algae FREE, clear glass and clean tank. Thoguh I was not very sure who popped by there as I was having the band banner painting. Anyway, for those who popped there, thanks!

Okay, in conclusion for this blog, the tank is going on smoothly, tahnks to our key personnel - The COM of the tank ~ Group Leader, Asst. Group Leader, QMs blah blah blah and of course, the Group members. Without the co-operation of the Group members and the determination of the COM, it makes no sense. So, here, tanks to all who made the fishes living.

Hope everyone has enjoyed their holidays. For those who were not glad with their class or combi, jst mork hard and you can make it? Trust yourself if you don't trust me like how I don't trust myself. What am I talking about huh? I don't get it too..

Fer group 1, tuesday was when ms lu gave us her promised treat. as fer e tank, it is completely stable, cep fer a minor algae problem due to e rotting of leftover food and the lights. as the tank has several glass panels glued to e top, stands fer e lamps is near impossible. the lamps stand problem muz be solved asap, as the water from the overhanging filter might leak and short out e lamps.

on a happier note, i am glad to say dat a species of e fish hav layed eggs all round the aquarium. ms lu suspects it might be rainbow fish eggs as they were layed in clumps, unlike e usualy scattering habits of rosy barbs. i however, tink dat dey might be rosy barb eggs as suspected mating activity was viewed on tuesday. 2 groups of rosy barbs were situated @ different positions in the tank, consisting of 3 in each group. 2 were engaged in a 'pecking' battle while e other stood by to watch.

After 2 days of non-death cases days, there comes another one. I came late to the SRC today so I did not really know which fish died. Anyway, please do more observations on the fishes as just last month and this month, there had been many death cases. I hope this can end soon.

Auto feeder
Auto feeder is working well and no damages for it. Food may have 2 be refilled on thursday.

New tank!
Guys we have set up a new tank in src. Feel free 2 take a look because it is a land and water eco system. It consists of frogs, crabs, fishes, and terrapin. You may find something interesting there.

6 fishes added
After so many death cases of fishes, we felt that the tank have to restock on the fishes. Thus, Aron, Dick and I went to the Toa Payoh fish shop. We bought 6 fishes for a total of $10. All 6 cichlids are chosen specially. One of the 6 of them is quite small in size. We have to observe its movement to prevent it from being sucked up to the hole of the tube of the filter and being preyed on other fishes.

Auto feeder
Really glad that the auto feeder have not been touched or 'damaged' by other people for quite a few days. The amount of food in the auto feeder is still sufficient to last till wednesday if nobody touches the feeder.

Conditions of fishes
Fortunately no fish deaths today. The fishes were very healthy and active. The do not really feel shy to people already. The were all willing to come out of their rocks to display their beautiful bodies!

Condition of tank and waters
There was no colour change in waters and temperature is 29 degrees. Please take note that the water level in the tank is quite low. Group members may have to fill it up on Monday afternoon. Thanks

Hi people,
Just a few things:
1. I'm doing the hemming for Group 1 because no one seems to know how to do it! (And Darren, in case you are still wondering, I've yet to do it yet cos I'm busy with band camp preparations) The video has been completed, and Jerome will be bringing it to school when he can. (Thanks Jerome for coming down to return the fire wire.)

2. I'm sure you all are not so evil that you want to make me broke. I hope that all of you are doing this project for the sake of interest... and not solely for benefits like CIP hours, and treats, which would be missing the point altogether. Take such things as bonuses, rather than things that you are entitled to demand for. And no. No Seoul Gardens.

3. Dick, thanks for helping Group 2 with their tank today, do stick with using double scotch. Will pass it to you when you need it. Let me know when you next want to go down to fix the stuff.

Group 1 ~ Information & Things To Be Said...

Okay... Now, again about Group 1 cause it seems that other than Group 3 (Dick's Group tank) who had posted only 1 blog, the rest - Group 2 (GABRIEL'S TANK) has been blogging very often and so, Group 1 got to catch up! Well, I think this issue will mostly be in paragraphs lesser in point form as I have more things to clarify!

Holidays Meetings For Group 1:
Okay... Turthfully, I have to got say that Group 1 has been coming back to school - SRC very often to complete their task... They - Jerome, Evan Kong & Nigel Chang, this few people are very hardworking as they not only have been watching over Group 1's tank closely, Jerome has also started the video editing and it is almost done! Well, the Desgin Committee has also been working very hard to make sure that the poster board's "make-up" is to perfect standard before letting it to be seen by the other students in the school - MSHS! Also, for ANY Group 1 members who would like to help out this guys in finishing the task, please contact either Jerome or Nigel. So, thank you guys for working hard... And, they have been asked what treat they wanted... Woo~ Well, just to fill up the mind of others, they requested for Seoul Garden but, Ms Lu refused... Anyway, Ms Lu, what would you like to offer them?

In Contrast To Xiu Hao's Group 2's Report:
Well, read Xiu Hao's report and found out that someone has been playing around with the automatic feeder of Group 2's tank... Well, think I can guess who is those people, but, due to the reasons that it may affect some relationships, will be not saying yet. But, Xiu Hao, think that you can save your time by not writing in the blog, as I think they will not be reading!

Cloth:
Okay... Was told that the people went back to school to do some video editing... Poster Board etc... Also, they said that they will be doing the cloth... Get the cloth to be Hem (Got the correct spelling from Ms Lu!)... So, wonder how is the movie and cloth now?

Auto feeder intentionally 'damaged'
This is already the third time I am stressing about intentionally damaging of auto feeder in reports. I do not know who did this, but whoever who did this, please STOP doing so. Our fish food is running out. The auto feeder was opened to the full amount the second time on monday. I seriously hope that the person responsible may own up and apologise and promised that he or they will not do it again. I do not know who has been visiting the SRC when we were not around. However, if we find any more of this happening, we will cooperate with Ms Lu to take action.

Health Conditions of fishes
Well, some of them are bloated, it is believed that it has got to do with the intentional damage to the auto feeder. When it is opened to the full amount, about half the food in the auto feeder will be poured in. This results the fishes to be overfed, thus bloated. The others were all very active. However, gabriel and yuhuai told me that 1 fish died, but i do not know which one, i will do a report on it once i got the details.

Conditions of tank and waters
-No damage in tank
-No colour change in water
-Temperature of water : 28 degrees

Poster Boards
We got to work on the poster boards already, guys! It is already heading the the end of november, please find information for it. Let's hope we can complete the poster boards by mid-dec.

Hope you all are enjoying your hols! Thought I'll add some updates:

1. Budget: Finally closing this on Friday, 26 Nov. No more claims after that...

2. Group 2: Dick has kindly agreed to help you all with the construction of the "covering" for the tank stand... so would really hope you all would help him as much as possible! And thanks, Dick, for helping in this.

Another matter, I think the mealworms are attracting ants, so please try to clear them by mid Dec?

3. Group 1: During a visit to the SRC on Tuesday, there was a huge puddle of water on the floor in front of the tank. Not too sure why it was there... but do check if there's anything leaking. Dick and Yuhuai helped me to shift the top filter so that it doesn't drip, and mop up the floor (in fact, Yuhuai mopped up like 1/3 of the SRC)... so must thank them for their help!

4. Posters and videos: Good to see you all working on the posters. Group 1's poster is almost finished, so well done. And Group 1 is doing a video, which was edited by Jerome... thanks to all those who helped (in all those smiling and nodding interviews)... For the other 2 groups, let me know if you are free and would want to do some video on your tanks, but its not compulsory, meanwhile, I may ask you to do some feedback thingy, for certain people in the group.

Group 1 ~ Holiday Work (2)

Okay... Now for the 2nd update for what Group 1 has done during the holidays... It was mentioned earlier in the previous post and now I am telling you more about what we had done... And about the things that ought to be done as soon as possible... So, for the rest of Group 1 members... This is what we have done and you can join us... Just contact Nigel Chang, Evan Kong or Jerome. But for now, this is what we done!

A brief summary... (Only once in a life-time!)
At about noon on 22 Nov 04. the band held a election for the comittee... And there was 11 people who was selected... The band voted and while the present COM and the teachers counted the votes, we pop by at the SRC. Jerome and Evan was there... I am really not sure what they were doing and I saw my maps and a little information. After that, we got called to cast our votes too. Soon, the 7 COM members were announced. I am not sure if I could say who they were now, but you can ask any of the 11 people ( I think. ) or wait for Thursday!

Group 1's Fish Tank
Well, Group 1's fish tank were as good as the previous post. There was not ny fishes that were entering the other world or even plants. So, very well done to all fishes and plants!

Poster Board
Okay... For the poster board (Well, it seems to be the biggest issue during the holidays) it is almost done! Hooray... And thanks to all the group members of Group 1 esp: The design committee! The poster board is now filled with educational purposes and it is awaiting for the information on ecosystem and the final touch-up before it is ready to face the students!

Video Editing
As our Group is chosen for the IT stuffs (really not sure what is it all about), we got to film and Jerome is now busy at work. He is busy putting the best effects and stuffs to make the video a enjoyable one. So, let's wait for that.

Finally, before I actually end off with this issue, I would like to tell all Group members once again to kindly bring the cloth to the Homec Room to be Ham. Well, Thanks!

Safe and Sound
The last death case had broken the record of the most peaceful fish tank record which had saddenned the whole group. However, today there were NO fish deaths! That shall be a good news after so many things happening to our tank. They were swimming freely in the tank and were very active. There were also no missing fishes for the day. For now, everytime when the band members have CCA, they will spend some time visiting the tanks. We still have to observe the conditions of the fishes for preventing more deaths. Thanks for all cooperation.

Auto Feeder
The auto feeder was working very well, with no intentional destroyers around(i hope). The amount of food given should be sufficient to last them for 1 - 2 weeks(if everything goes on smoothly). However, group members will find some time to visit SRC to check on the auto feeder(the fishes still need to eat, if auto feeder is not working, then DIE lor,lol). For other members who went to the SRC, please do not adjust the gaps of the auto feeder as we had already adjusted it so that they will be given sufficient food instead of being bloated or starved.

Condition of tank and waters
No damage in tank and waters is constant at 28.5 degrees.

Conclusion
-Focus more on amount of food given
-Observe more on the conditions of the fishes
-Check the water colour and the temperature of water everytime.

Poster Boards
I don't see any developements of the poster boards, group members and leader please take note. I hope we will do this fast so that we wont be rushing when holidays are ending. So keep working during the holidays!

Things to be included in the poster board
Here are some of the guildlines given by Ms Justina Lu to be included in the postal board.

a)Purpose :through this, when people read the information of our poster board, they can be educated as they are able to know the names of our fishes, their habitat, what they eat etc.

b)Include the following information
1)Type of ecosystem : ____________
2)Where can the ecosystem be found(maps are encouraged)
3)Abiotic Factors: Type of pH, temperature, light, salinity, etc.
4)Test your biology knowledge : Name the types of living organism(interactions mutalism, predator-prey) Include pictures as well.
5)Interesting facts, features of organisms.(What will happen when they were stressed, eat too much etc)
6)Acknowledgements of donated items
7)Also include names of people who contributed in the whole ecology project
8)Make the poster boards as colourful and interesting as possible so that visitors will be attracted to the tank and the board.

One Last thing
Please try not to give all kinds of scientific terms or names as your friends may not be interested to read.
We hope to complete the poster board by Mid December 2004.

Group 1 ~ Holiday Work

Okay... As all of us know, the holidays have already arrived... And well, the tanks in the SRC has still have to be going... So, all the group members are busy with their head down doing up the tanks and poster boards... Now, let me tell you about the going of Group 1's work. Group 1 has worked hard and I would like to take this chance and say a big "Thank You" to all Group 1 members, esp: Nigel Chang, Evan Kong and Jerome as they had been taking time off their well deserved holidays and work for Group 1. Therefore, once again, "Thank You!"

Group 1's Tank
Okay... The fishes in our tank is still living (Well, let give the fishes a round of applause...) and the plants too! So, well done fishes!

Poster Board
Well, the holidays has arrived and the poster board has to be due before the 24th November 2004. A gentle reminder to all the groups too. Now, Group 1's poster board is going to be finished soon and we are only left with some parts to be completed as soon as possible. This parts that has to be done is listed below:

1. Information on Fishes / Ecosystem etc

2. Pictures on Fishes

3. Overall touch-up

The automatic feeder is also ready and it is working for the tank and fishes. The rest of the tank fishes and plants are also healthy and enjoying themselves in the tank. We also bought a new plant, Taiwan Moss which cost $8 (Sorry if this is the wrong spelling!) and as it is a little too little, Jerome had offered to bring it home first. Therefore, you can find the plant at Jerome's house first. Anyway, thank you Jerome!

Lastly, a gentle reminder to all Group 1's member, the cloth to cover the bottom of the tank is still not being Ham. So, members if you are free, could you kindly go up to the Homec Room to do some sewing. Thanks. In conclusion, this is the work has done by Group 1.

Death of fish
Today, at 12.40pm, Jason and I announced the fish dead. It was more pathetic than the last death case. It was found sticking on the filter tube hole with its mouth opened. Jason believed that it died before it is being sucked towards the tube as it was observed that all fishes are able to swim to avoid the strong wavelike of water to the tube. The colour of the fish had came off and its mouth is left opened wide. We used a net to fish out that fish and went to throw it away in the bin.

Auto Feeder
Another thing to worry about is the auto feeder. Today when we went to check on the auto feeder, there wasn't any food left. It was recalled to have almost filled before we left the SRC the other time. When gabriel checked the opening of the feeder, it was opened to the full amount. It was, once again, being done by someone in the SRC when we were not in. I hope that person will refrain from his wrongdoings as by doing this may cause 2 major consequences to the fishes. Due to the large amount of food given, the fishes will die for being bloated. Another consequence is that there will not be enough food left for the fishes for next year.

Condition of fishes
The other fishes were very active except for the dead one .

Condition of tank and water
The tank was not damaged and the waters are clear and no colour change. Temperature is constant at 29 degrees. There is no change in the fishes' behaviour due to the water. There is a decrease in the water level, maybe we will try to add more water into it.

Conclusion
I hope that the people who visit the SRC do not touch other people's stuff. If vandalism still occurs in the SRC, ACTIONS will be taken.

real busy. the info on the Rosy Barbs hav all been completed and is just waiting for publishing on the info board. the info on the rainbow fish, the SEA and the corys will be researched in the following WEEK. the info on the ecosystem will also be completed in the week as well. As for the video, it will be completed in the second week as well as foraging for pics in the video iself to be used in the video. this is wad group 1 is doing in the nxt few weeks.

Group 2 Report : Missing Fishes yet to be found

Missing Fishes
As stated in the last report, there were two missing fishes. It has since Saturday gone missing. As I have stated in the last report, we ruled out the possibility of being eaten up, however, I think this possibility is made possible again as it has been missing for about 1 week. We looked into the tank and try to find them(or maybe their bodies), but was in vain. This incident is similar to the mysterious missing case happening to the $5 fish 2 months back. Don't worry, we will continue to find them and hope that the same thing will not happen again. With 3 missing fishes altogether and 1 died fish, I think we should reflect on our plans and schedules in taking care and observe the fishes for Group 2.

Auto Feeder
The amount of food set to drop for the fishes is quite sufficient in our opinion. It is working well. Yesterday, Gabriel said he visited the SRC and found the auto feeder scattered on the floor. Luckily the food did not scatter about but all parts of the auto feeder were dispatched. We suspect that this might have been done by a person and not dropped by itself as it is very obvious that it is being thrown on the floor. We hope that person can refrain from what he's done and bring inconvenience for our Group.

Condition of fishes
All the fishes were very healthy except 1 which is bloated. Despite it being bloated, it still swam in the waters very actively. We thought that there is no possibility of death for this fish due to it as this case is different from the other which was bloated and refuses to move. As usual, the fishes crowd around the feeding areas.
Note : The feeding time of the auto feeder is 7am and 5pm, please do not feed the fishes around that time to prevent them to be overfed.

Condition of tank and waters
The waters were clear and its temperature is constant at 28 degrees. No colour change for water. The gravels in the waters were also clean.

Conclusion
The 2 missing fishes case is another case we worry about. It is assumed that the bigger fishes will eat the smaller fishes. Therefore we should refrain from buying smaller cichlids , we should buy fishes that are almost the same size. As what i had stated above, we should replan our feeding schedules and the representatives for the schedules. This is to be done due to the consideration of missing fishes. We hoped that by doing this, members can observe the fishes more and find out the reason for disappearing in the tank as well as how and why it get bloated.

1. Ms Lu, could we have the guidelines for the infoboard? We lost it.
2. What must we write on our posterboard? Write our names can liao?
3. Posterboard? Have meh?
4. Got guidelines meh? Since when? I thought ____/_____ had them?

Anyway, to answer all those posterboard questions... here are the guidelines:

A. Purpose: So that your friends and teachers who visit the tanks will be "educated" about your masterpieces, so in the future, they will know the names of fishes such as "rummy nose tetras" and "cardinal tetras", and not refer to them as "colourful ikan bilis". Also, that they'll learn that such fishes can be found in the wild, in different countries, and not only in fish shops and restaurants.

B. Format: Information you should include

1. Name of Set-up/Ecosystem: ____________________

2. Where can such an ecosystem be found (may want to include a map)

3. Abiotic Factors: Type of pH, temperature, light, salinity, etc.

4. Fish tank community: Types of living organisms in the ecosystem (Include plants if possible) and any interactions (Mutualism? Predator-prey?)
(Try to include pictures, but please use your own photos, due to copyright issues.)

5. Interesting facts/features about the living organisms (Endangered? Changes colour? Gestation period of fishes? Livebearing or egg scattering fishes? This is all really up to you.)

1st Group 3 Report

Hi there everyone. This is the first time Group 3 has blog even though the person who is not suppose to be blogging for Group 3 is blogging =) I followed Xiu Hao's method (Hope you don't mind). It was neat and in order. Today, we went to the SRC to clean the tanks and did some replanting.

Group 3: Amazon Basin
Report on 12th November 2004
Time of visit: 0800 hours to 1000 hours

Cleaning of tanks
The tank was in a mess. The plants were overgrown. First, we went to catch the fishes out and we put them into a pail. We then took out all the overgrown plants and trim them. The dead ones were thrown away. After that, we suck up the dirty water into the pail and pour them away. We also cleaned the tank using cloths. We carried fresh new water and poured them into the tanks. Next, we replanted the water plants. There was much lesser water plants than before because most of them were thrown away (the dead ones).

Auto Feeder
It was working rather well. No problems. The food inside was also almost finished. So we stocked up some fish food into the auto feeder.

Condition of fishes
The fishes were swimming as usual. No signs of being sick. Most of them were active and healthy. 3 rummy nose tetras were taken from group 1's tank and added to the our tank to test out the tank.

Condition of tank and water
The tank was clear but not the water, as usual. Even though the tank was cleaned, it still look dirty. It was due to the fish waste, dead plants from the bottom that caused the water to be dirty.

Hmmm, after Gandalf Stormcrow has spoken, I must add a few words.

1. Group 1 has been allowed the sum of $10 if they still need to get java moss to encourage the procreation of the rosy barbs.

2. Group 1's member, Evan Kong needs to be sent on a mission to fill up the CO2 canister as pre-arranged last time. $20 for his mission.

3. Group 3 has been allowed the "generous" amount of $20 for the reforesting of their tank, which was redesigned today. Thanks for the hard work!

4. Groups should be starting on their info boards. I know that Group 1 will be doing theirs tmr afternoon. Will upload the guidelines as an entry for you all to refer just in case the list that I passed to each group went MIA.

Group 1 Schedule

Group 1's members will be completing the info board by the 24th of November. The info board will be completed by this Saturday, which is the 13th of November. All Group 1 members from Sec 2 Charles will be coming this Saturday. Nothing has been heard from the other members in Group 1.
Secondly, the video taken will be edited on the 22nd and the 23rd of November. Hopefully the editing will be completed by the 22nd, at most, the 23rd.

Purpose Of Report : 2 missing fishes

2 Missing Fish
Mysteriously, today Hairy Gaybriel went to check the fishes again and found only 14 fishes. We are missing 2 fishes! However we ruled out the possibility of being eaten up as they were one of the fastest swimmers in the tank. We also ruled out the possibility of being sucked up to the filter as we had attached a covering to the hole of the tube. Therefore we assummed that they werent being eaten up or killed by Hairy, they should be hiding in between the rocks.

Auto Feeder
The auto feeder had really saved us alot of time and we do not need to come down specially just to feed the fishes. However, we still have to make trips to check the auto feeder. Fortunately the auto-feeder is working well.

Conditions of fish
The fishes were very active as usual. No more sign of fishes being bloated

Condition of tank and water
The waters were clear and water temperature : 27 degrees

Hey pp,
Glad to see that some groups have been blogging very consistently... Well done! Good to know also that some of you have been checking on the tanks. Now with the feeders, I guess its easier cos you don't need to send pp everyday to feed them, and really appreciate it when pp take the effort to go in to see if the tank is ok. Thing is... hope that this can be a "regular" thing (Perhaps 2/3 times a week)? The groups leaders... maybe you can see who is going back for CCA each day, then these pp can go in to check, which takes only about 10 min... Takes only a bit of effort just to check on your tanks... Don't want it to be a case where a fish is sick and spreads it to the rest because it wasn't detected, or fishes die and we get dead fishes rotting inside cos no one checked the place... So do keep up on "caring" for the fishes. And enjoy your hols!

Auto Feeder
Now, with the auto feeder installed, we do not have to feed the fishes like usual but still have to observe them. Every visit to the SRC, I will check whether the auto feeder is working. Fortunately, it has been working well. Although the auto feeder is installed, we still have to make trips to the SRC to observe the health conditions of the fishes. Below are some observations of the health conditions.

Health Conditions of bloated/pregnant fishes(as stated in the last report)
It has been comfirmed that the fishes found bloated were not pregnant. They were overfed. After 2 days when we stepped into the SRC, the fishes were not found bloated anymore as I had controlled the amount of food to be given each time for the auto feeder. Fortunately it was not as bad as the dead fish. Anyway, members please feed the fishes with a certain amount of food, do not overfeed. Thanks.
Note: Overfeeding of fishes may cause the fishes to be less active, no appetite, or even death.

Health conditions of other fishes
The other fishes which werent overfed were all very healthy(basically all the fishes), some recovered from bloating were also very healthy. They often crowd along the feeding areas. However, when they see a few people heading towards the tank, they hide in their rocks.(Maybe they are shy!)

Condition of tank and waters
The tank is well maintained and the waters were clear, at a temperature of 27 degrees. Filter was working well.

Conclusion
We should feed the fishes at respective times and not overfeed. As I have stated in the previous report, the auto feeder will drop the food at 7am and 5pm, thus, if you want to feed the fishes, please do not do it near the time. Recommended time is 12nn. Thanks

Report on 2nd November 2004 : 5 fishes added, thermometer added.
Time of buying fish : 2.45pm
Price of fish : $4
Purpose of Report : To state the conditions of water and fishes.

Buying 5 new fishes
Hmm...Ms Lu says need to clear the budget as soon as possible, Dick, Alrik, Gabriel and Me went to Toa Payoh and Geylang areas to shop for things we still lack of. Meanwhile, we shopped for fishes. We went to a shop in Toa Payoh and found some nice fishes which is found suitable for our tank. We decided to buy them. It is sold at 5 for $4 when 1 fish was actually priced $1. We realised that it was quite worthwhile thus we purchased the fishes. We went to Geylang to buy a thermometer to read the temperature of our tank. It is quite useful and it is sold at $1.60.

Condition of fishes
Some of the fishes were found bloated. They may be pregnant or eaten too much. We are worried due to the first case death. Ms Lu asked us to observe the fishes over the next few days to see if any problems arise. We assumed that it wasn't the spread of the disease of the death fish as the bloated ones were very active unlike the died one. Let's pray for the well being of the fishes. The 5 new fishes seemed to adapt to the surroundings very well. Then swam everywhere together.

Condition of water
Temperature of water : 29 degrees(as read from the newly bought thermometer)
Waters were clear and no colour change.

Conclusion
We realised that some fishes were bloated. We are to observe all these fishes over a few more days and make sure nothing goes wrong. Thermometer is being placed in the tank. Feel free to check the temperature of water and inform Gabriel if the temperature is way too high of way too low. Thanks.

Group 1 - Riverine ~ Reminders

Okay... In addition to the previous post that I had posted, I would like to cover some points stated over here and some reminders for all Group 1 members as it is already the holidays, thus making the contact between all the Group members quite difficult. Therefore, I would urge all members to be checking the blog as regularly as you can as it may contain some very important information (On what you are to do / When should you be coming back etc). Please also check with Nigel Chang or Evan Kong for any detailed information, if not, the blog.

Person in-charge of blogging:
-Jasper, who is discharged from hospital, is finally back home and I am chatting with him now. Well, trying to update him on the movement of the tank and so, in a few more days' time, hope that he can start blogging. In the meantime, let us wish him speedy recovery!

Fish tank matters:
-As from the last post, I did mention the changes of the tank, the fishes, the wood and everything else that can be found in the tank. Therefore, if there are anymore updates on the fish tank matters, I will try to update it as soon as possible.

Poster Board & Construction Paper:
-As mention in Group 2's post from Xiu Hao, the poster boards have been already bought with the construction paper. This materials can all be found in the SRC and I hope that Group members; please start working fast to fill the poster board with educational purposes. Below are the places where you can find all the materials:

1. Poster Board - There are 2 poster boards, 1 for Group 2 and the other, for Group 1. The colours are yellow and orange and the yellow board is for Group 2 while the orange board is for Group 1. So, Group 1 members, please take the correct board!
2. Construction Paper - The construction paper has also been bought. It is kept in the cupboard below Group 3's tank where the CO2 is kept and is supposed to be shared among all 3 groups. Therefore, Group 1 members, please keep some for Group 2 and Group 3!

Decoration:
-Once again, back to decoration, the cloth has been bought too and is being kept in the cupboard below the Group 3's tank at the same place where the construction paper is kept. However, according to Ms. Lu, she said that the cloth has to be Ham (I am not very sure about the spelling but, the "sound" should be the same. Sorry!), to prevent students from pulling the edges of the cloth spoiling the cloth. Therefore, I had asked Ms. Chin and she said that we could go up to the Homec room to sew. So, group members, if you happen to be in school and can spare some time, please bring the cloth and go up to the Homec room to be sewed.

Holidays Schedule:
-For the holiday's schedule, please note that the fish tank will still have to be check and the fishes will still have to be fed. So, as mention in the previous post, anyone who is in school and if Ms. Lu is around, can you kindly check on the tank and please log into the log book. If there are any fishes entering the other world, please take it out from the tank and dump it into the rubbish bin. If any fish has to enter the hospital, please take that fish out and put the fish into the hospital tank. But, I hope that none of these will happen... So, fishes stay in the tank!

In conclusion for this post, all group members involved in the different roles, please play your role now, as this is the moment we have to be extra careful of. Those members, who are involved in the poster board, please get all the information ready and I will try to get it done onto the board as soon as I can. Lastly, for all the decoration and checking of the tank, please do so while the sewing of the cloth has to be done asap too. So, Group members, please try your very best to help out in all these matters.

Death of fish : The bloated one stated on the last report
Time of death : Undefined(somewhere in between 5am - 11am)
Time found death : 11am

Auto-feeder attached
After band ends, Dick, Aron and me went to the SRC. I did a head count on the fishes. There were only 11 fishes! I counted for 4 times and the number of fishes still remain unchanged. I began to worry about the last one. I decided to fix the auto-feeder to the tank first before doing the final head count of the day. We attached the auto-feeder to Group 2 & 3 tanks. The auto feeder for Group 2 tank will feed the fishes at 7am and 5pm everyday.

Death of fish
After attaching the auto-feeder, I did a final headcount. While counting, i found a fish lying on the ground motionlessly. It was dead! We took a net to take the dead fish out. It was around 11am when we found that fish. I believe it was the first fish death happening to the African Rift Lake(the other one had gone missing mysteriously). That fish was the bloated one which we found it quite strange in its behaviour 2 days ago. Let's hope the same thing will not happen again.

Poster Boards
The poster boards are here. For Khengkia and Gabriel, the poster board we wanted are behind Group 3's tank. If you need to use it, please take it from there. Thanks.

Health condition of other fishes
Despite the death of one fish, the other fishes were found active as usual and healthy. The crowd around the feeding areas when they saw us coming with food. Perhaps they must be very hungry. Now with the auto-feeder attached, i suppose the fishes will have regular meals from now on.

Condition of tank
The waters are clear as usual and no colour change.

Conclusion
The death of 1 fish was a pressure reacting on the group members as it was the first case. We are to observe the conditions of the fishes over the next few days and hope the same thing does not happen again.

Golden Rule
We all know (or should know) that African rift lake cichlids require a lot of caves or hiding spots, the best substrate for their tanks is well washed sand from the beach, the ratio of males to females is of paramount importance and many more.
Of course, what is “minor details” for us is “absolutely essential” for our fish.
When you realise something is wrong with one of the species in tha tank, you should search for more information, reading for more articles to find a answer.
Caves from stones
It is advisable that once stones are glued together to the silicon, you should not touch or move it around in the tank.
The security feeling is very important to our fishes and one way to create this feeling to them is to make caves which we never touch, move, open or explore.
Feeding
It is recommended that we feed the cichlids 2-3 times daily in order to let them breed often.

Group 1 - Riverine

Okay.. Now the updates for Group 1 since the change of the environment, now Riverine (As from Ms. Lu post on 24th October 2004, Sunday).

Our person in-charge of blogging for Group 1:
-Jasper, who is in-charge of blogging for Group 1, is unable to as for some reasons and since he was not updated about the change and everything else, thus, of the lesser updates and blogs from Group 1 other than Jerome's blog. Therefore, this will be the lastest updates and things of Group 1 since the change of the environment.

Reasons for the change of the environment:
-The environment was originally Brackish water and contained Monos and Archers fishes. But, unfortunately, the numbers of Archers decreased each day or every other day and was the fastest tank that lost those precious fishes, as it was quite a tough job maintaining the environment as close to nature. Therefore, thinking about the future, the Group members of Group 1 held a meeting with Ms. Lu and decided to change the environment from Brackish water to Riverine to prevent the loss of more fishes sending them to the other world and also, the loss of more money. So, in conclusion for the reasons of the change of the environment in Group 1, we have no more other choices but to change the environment for the benefits for the fishes and others.

The leftover fishes and food in the environment of Brackish Water:
-Those living fishes - mostly or rather all Monos are with Evan, as he offered to keep the fishes. The fishes are now at his house. It seems that the fishes are still very healthy and are still living. Therefore, let's hope that the fishes will not died, going to the other world and be healthy always! Stay healthy fishes! Next, about the food, the mealworms were given to the group - Group 2 and were being fed to the fishes. Also, they also tried to breed the next generation of mealworms and we are yet to know when it will be...

Our new enviornment - Riverine:
The environment of the fish tank was changed as soon as the meeting was over (~It was changed either on the very next day or the day after the next day) to its new environment. Water in the tank as being emptied (~3/4 of the waters) and it was replaced with fresh water and it was ready to welcome its first new batch of fishes!

The day outing:
On the very day that the water was changed, 2 of our Group 1 members followed Ms. Lu in Mr. Teo's car to get the first new batch of fishes, with the new 4 feet light and filter. The old light was given to Group 2 and the 4 feet light started working once it was being set up! Likewise, for the filter, it was being put into the tank with the setting up done by Jerome and members. With much time and effort put in, the filter also started work...

First batch of fishes that entered the tank:
The first batch of fishes that entered the tank is... The Rainbow fishes! (Notice that the name of the fishes was not named earlier!). The fishes were placed in the bag into the fish tank for about 1/2 an hour before it was being released into the tank. It was welcomed with 3 water filters, 1 water skimmer, woods and light! Check out below to learn more!

The fishes in the tank now:
Fishes, other than the rainbow fishes was also added into the tank, to accompany that lonely group of fishes. Therefore, the following fishes was also added into the tank as well:

1. Rainbow Fishes
2. Rosy Barbs
3. Corydoars
4. Saimese Algae Eater

So, this will be the types of fishes you can find in the 5 feet tank!

Fishes entering the other world:
Fishes entering the other world, compared to the previous environment is much lesser now, maybe of the easier environment? Well, but it is great that the number of the fishes entering the other world is lesser instead of increasing. Below is the number of the fishes that has left us:

1. 2 Rainbow Fishes

Wow, it is such a great improvement compared to the previous environment. Keep up the good low number of fishes leaving us, fishes!

Things to maintain the great environment:
A tank with fishes and water is not going to be alright.. So, here are the things that are helping the fishes to stay happy and healthy! So, look below:

1. 2 Filters
2. 1 Water Skimmer
3. 1 4 Feet Light
4. 1 Automatic Feeder
5. CO2

So, these are those non-living things to help the fishes stay healthy and happy but this is not all. The following topic that is going to be named is the Living things to maintain the health of the fishes.

Living things to maintain the great health of the fishes:
Since the non-living things of the fish tank has been touched, now let us move on to the living things. Below are those that give their services to the fishes to help them stay alive:

1. Curio Wood
2. Bog wood
3. Java Fern
4. Java Moss
5. Cabomba
and 1 other plant...

This living things are really helpful to the fishes as some help the fishes for recreational purposes while the moss help to encourage the birth rates of the fishes as the tank is suffering from low birth rates. So, fishes please give birth!

Remaining things to be settled for the group:
The things that are needed for this project is already all present, so, lets say something about it.

1. Poster Board
=> The poster board has already been bought and is left in the SRC waiting for it to be filled with educational purposes for others... So, the group is now working real hard on it.

2. Accounts
=> The accounts is almost settled already and thus, for those who have not claimed their money, please wait for awhile as the money is already on the "waiting list".

3. Decoration
=> As Ms. Lu said that Group 1 & 2 have to find something to cover the bottom of the tank, we have responded and have bought the materials needed.

Lastly, before the blog get "fully occupied" by this post, we are going to cover the rest - Holidays schedule.

Holidays schedule:
For the holidays, we tank will still have to be fed and we cannot rely totally on the automatic feeder and the worms as we have to also have to check for fishes entering the other world and also the conditions of the water. Therefore, we have to plan something and it will probably be the following schedule:

1. Anyone who goes back to school and if Ms. Lu is around, can enter the SRC and check on the fishes.
2. A date set and the whole group will come back and check the tank.

Therefore, this will be the dates set for the checking of the tank.

Finally, to end off with this newest updates and stuffs for Group 1, I hope everyone has understood the progress of our tank and post any remarks on the tag-board and we will try to respond as fast as we could. Last but not least, we hope that all the Group's fishes will not be decreasing and moving on to another part of their life at the other world and will remain in their tanks.

Anyway, my apologies for bombarding the group leaders and some members with all the requests to purchase this and that... Thanks for being so co-operative. Have no choice as we need to submit all the claims by this week, and I need time to process the receipts... (everything has to be pasted onto A4 paper and recorded...)

Fish Check

Report on Group 2's tank on 28 October 2004
As Secondary 4 students were having thir O level practical in the morning, the Students Recreation Centre is out-of-bounds till 1 pm. We looked for Ms Lu everywhere in the school after school but still could not find her. However, we managed to get the key of the SRC.
Some members of each group went in to feed the fishes. I was one of them. Jason took out the fish food and proceed to our tank. We do a fish head count first before we feed the fishes. The fishes were all outside their rocks, they seemed to be waiting for food. In order to get their food, they had to 'queue up' for us to do a fish head count first. When we counted all the fishes, we added the food. The fishes went rushing and snatching for the food once it was put in the tank! However, one of the fishes doesnt seem to move. It seemed to be bloated. Gabriel assumed that it had eaten too much mealworms therefore was not hungry for food. Some fishes changed colour. The waters were clear and the temperature was right. No other symptoms found on fishes other than the bloated one.

Hmm...I have been taking down the amount of fishes dying in MSHS and I am glad to say that you all have succeeded in preventing the fishes from dying. Good Job. Today, I have recorded the amount of fishes alive and I realised that there is an increase in population in Tank Number 1. Well! I think the students have done a great job to contribute time and effort to buy those fishes.Well done! Lastly, Tank 2 and 3 have done a great job in maintaining the death rate of the fishes. So Keep up the good work and prevent the fishes from crossing over.

Group 2 tank
As I have CCA today, i went to the SRC early to feed the fishes. However, Ms Lu came earlier than me, she fed the fishes for us. Report on the health conditions of the fishes. Before i observe the health conditions, i do a Fish Head Count! 1, 2, 3, 4, .... 12! Ok...all present! Now report on health conditions.
1) No symptoms found
2)Very active
3)Very Healthy!
The waters are clear and at correct temperature.
Generally, the tank and the fishes are alright!

Ok come to group matters. More chillids, ordered by Ms Lu to clear the budget! I suggest to have a group meeting to discuss on the posters, buying of chillids etc. Thanks! Gabriel please take note!

Makeover

As ms lu has stated in the previous post, Group 3's tank, has undergone and is still undergoing a major 'facelift'. Changing from Brackish to somthing kinda like Group 1's tank format.
currently, the tank's completion will probably range from a few more days, to weeks. but on a lighter note, the chemical balance has stabilised. most things mechincal hav been repaired and fixed, including the new lamp. Gas quantity is also satibilising, and soon, the airpump might be rendered redundant. the only issues left r supplementing the current community and the gas add-on.
according too ms lu, our choice of fishes is "hap-hazard", so i'll hav a talk with Evan to see what we can do.
the gas add-on concernes the CO2 tank, which is all under evan's supervision.
other than that, the fishes seem to be doing quite well and we can probably expect offspring by nxt year. Now why can't we expect the same for Mr Kan and Ms Lee?? hmmmm, ponder ponder...

Breaking News: Budget 2004 Update

As the month of October draws to a close, members of the Aquatic Ecology Project (AEP) group have been busy trying to conclude their expenses for their masterpieces, as funding ceases after the end of this month. Quite a few loose ends are left that need to be tied and are as follows:

For all groups:
The poster-boards and materials for the display write-up should be bought ASAP so that accounts can be closed. Deadline: 29 October
Budget for each poster (including materials like paper): $10

1. Amazon Basin:
Group still needs to source for Yamato shrimp. Its recommended that the group get their own as the stock available at their supplier are very small.
Budget: $10
Also, the group needs to source for an auto-feeder that is usable in their tank (which is covered).
Budget: $28 (including batteries if required)

2. African Rift Lake:
After the purchase of 5 more new cichlids, the group needs to review whether they still want to get more fishes. If so, they would need to complete the purchases by this week.
Budget: $20
The group needs to cover up their stand with plywood/cloth if possible before school closes.
Budget: $30 (try to keep this lower if possible)
An auto-feeder is also needed. Group may want to purchase feeder along with Dick's group.
Budget: $28 (including batteries if required)
Finally, would need to review the breeding of mealworms as it seems that there is a colony of ants coming along as well.

3. Riverine:
This tank is the "newest" so there's still alot of work needed. Group's proposal of rasboras, silver sharks, fighting fish may be a little... mishmash, so it'll need reviewing. Understand that the tank needs plants too?
Budget for fish and plants: $70
This group has an auto-feeder already, please get batteries for the feeder? And also, group needs to get a new multi-plug, and would have to think about how to neaten all the wires that are dangling all over. Finally, the group also needs to cover up their stand with plywood and cloth, before the end of the week.
Budget (batteries, cloth, etc): $40

Evan, there is still enough money, so you can go ahead and fill up the canister with CO2.

I refer to your blog entry dated 23 October 2004, and I thank you for your concern over the fishes in the Student Recreation Centre, MSHS, Singapore. Perhaps you were not able to read into the situation over here in Singapore as it is too far away from the Amazon, which explains your inability to forsee the current situation (even though you are supposed to be a mind-reader).

With regards to your queries, perhaps I would be in a better position to answer your questions. Firstly, the SRC was opened on Friday for feeding as per normal. It was closed on Saturday as I was still down with a fever and was unable to come to school. (Unless some gentleman in school went to draw the key from the office, if so, well done to him for his initiative!) As school normally does not open on Sunday, I would have to assume that the fishes were not fed on Sat and Sun (unlike you, maam, I am not a mind-reader, and having pyrexia does not help). However, I'm sure that the fishes will be alright as the tanks have undergone such a routine of 2 days of fasting and have emerged none the worse. So I would say to my worried students that they need not worry, and I will check on the tanks on Monday, and allow the fish to break their fast as well. (So everyone... DON'T WORRY! The fish should be ok!)

Lastly, for all your concern, I would like to extend an invitation for you to visit our school to view the fish tanks. Perhaps you might want to bring along some tetras along with you as a gift from the Amazon, as I'm sure the Group 3 members would be really grateful.

Well! It has been three days since the students last stepped into the SRC. The SRC was completely out of bound to all students as it was used for the practical exams. I can see that alot of the students are getting even more excited and worried as the days passed by.

Hey! New fishes added on 20 October 2004! There are a total of 5 new fishes. All fishes were very healthy today! Waters were clear, temperature was alright. The fishes were as usual, very active in the waters. Jason bought the new fishes and we all agreed that he had made right choices. All the fishes he bought were very attractive looking! We liked the fishes very much!

Report on Group 2's tank

It has been a long time since i post entries. This entry is a report on the quality of the tank, waters, conditions of fishes etc.

All fishes today were very active, they chased each other around. When it was their 'meal times', all of them were crowding on areas where the food is added. They seemed to be very hungry. They also competed with each other for food. As usual, after they had their 'meal', they continued to swim in the tank. Some of them went hiding in the rocks. The tank was in good condition and the waters were clear. The fishes were very healthy.

Live from tank 1

Hmmmm, yesterday I was shifted into my new home, a second-hand one recently vacated by some monos, who have moved on to better waters in Mr Evan Kong's house. We have a big big home now, a five feet tank. Anyway, me and 10 other tank mates are now happy and fed... (Yup, 10 others aside from me. They made a mistake yesterday and allowed one more of my friends to gate-crash, so we are a happy family of 11!)

Next door to us is a tank full of cichlids who seem to be doing ok, and on the other side, the amazon fishes seem to be happy and thriving too. Hope we get new tank-mates soon! And to our owners, do enjoy your weekend!

as y'all probably noe, the exams r over. as y'all probably figure out, the format of Group 1's tank is changed from BRACKISH to FRESHWATER. but so as not to copy the tank format of Dick's group, which is Amazon Basin (ithink), ours is called RIVER RAPIDS BASE. if u dun noe wad dat means, it probably means u dun need to noe. if u do, well good fer u!

p.s. those who can, please pray as many times as possible for the well-being for our fellow group member and school-mate, Jasper Tan, who is lying in bed, ICU, sick from pneumonia (i think). if u say anything that is bad luck, get a piece of wood and keep it in ur pocket.

p.s.s i will not allow people to make fun of Jasper in this period of time, so if u wanna try me, get ready for a meeting with dennis koh with several broken ribs and a badly cut lip.

Fish: Fatality, Feeding and Fertility

Ok, just 3 points to make today...

1. Fellows in charge of the first tank, the five-footer:
Glad to know the monos are doing fine for now... but you guys forgot to carry out under-taker duties! Going by what Jerome tells me, it'll be Nigel and Evan who would be going along to get the stuff this thursday. Will call the aquarium to confirm the orders for the sharks and cories tmr.

2. Feeding of fishes tmr:
Since none of you will be around tmr, will do the feedling for you all.

3. Fertile fish and fry:
Anyone interested in rearing guppies? Cos I have 30 odd guppy fry in a pail at home. The female guppy in my tank popped yesterday... and have managed to save most of the babies. (The mum and dad ate the rest, which amounted to 20 plus... ) Do let me know if you want some, will pass them to you when they get slightly bigger.

for the outing on Thursday, nigel is confirmed. but shawn liu can't make it so me and evan r probably gonna either get Alvin to go or just get evan to go. point is, we need strong guys. they gotta carry the 5-foot light fer the tank and other stuff i dun noe about but they r supposed to collect. so, yar that's bout it.

p.s. 1 o the fish can do a disappearing act and they r hard to count. so those responsible for the job of counting them, make sure u count properly!

Its tough being a fish...

Today was an eventful day for me. Firstly, when I was napping in my tank this morning, a net suddenly swooped down on me and I was chucked into a bag with 20 others. Then we were left in a box (which seemed to be placed on a rollercoaster!), and we bumped and splashed around for around 30 minutes.

At the end of the journey, we thought we'll be placed back into a normal tank, but unfortunately, 6 of us were fished out and placed into an even smaller bag! Another rollercoaster ride was to come, with 30 other fishes as our neighbours this time. (They were red-nosed, probably after bumping so much onto the side of the bag... Luckily for them, I was too sick to try to eat them...)

Finally, at the end of the ride, we were placed into this HUGE tank, with only 2 other occupants, both also monos, but one was alive, the other was... well... not alive. Hopefully life will get better from now on! Minutes into being released into the tank, my poor tank-mate was fished out for a burial. Unfortunately, all those red-nosed fellows have been placed 4m away, where we can't get at them. Too bad...

Feeding of Fishes on 15th and 16th October
All group 2 members please take note. On 14th October 2004, Secondary 2B, 2G and 2I will be having their sec 2 camps. The duty rosters for 15th and 16th October will be affected. As Group 2 consists of mostly 2G pple, and there is may not be lessons on Friday 15th October 2004. I hope someone would volunteer to come to school to feed the fishes on both Friday and Saturday.

If you want to volunteer to feed the fishes on any of the two days, please inform Gabriel, you can contact him through email or at Secondary 2G. Thanks!

SA2 is almost upon us... so wanted to wish everyone all the best for your papers. Study hard!

During SA2, the fishes still need to eat. So do follow the duty roster yeah? Just that there is no recess time, so we'll use the break between 2 papers (if its more than 30 min) for feeding. I'll open up the SRC for about 10 min, so you guys can go into the SRC to feed the fish, after which I'll lock up...

Feeding Times during SA2:
4 Oct Mon: 9.50 am
5 Oct Tue: 10.05 am
6 Oct Wed: 9.35 am
7 Oct Thur: 10.35 am
(Note: This would be after both maths papers)
8 Oct Fri: 10.05 am

11 Oct Mon: 9.30 am
12 Oct Tue: No papers so I'll feed for all groups
13 Oct Wed: 9.05 am
14 Oct Thur: 9.30 am
(For this day only, pls get your group leader to draw the key from the General Office.
I'll be in the hall invigilating the Sec 3s. The visit to the fish shop in Jurong for Grps 1 & 3 will be on this day, from 11 am onwards.)

Small report

As no one seems to be blogging for now, i shall break the ice. Just to give a small report for Group 2's tank.

When we feed the fishes today, we found white spots on one fish and it kept scrubbing itself. This may be a disease and may spread to other fishes. However, group members, not to worry, we have added medicine during lunch break therefore it should be alright. I hope all 3 tanks will settle down soon so that there wont be so much troubles.

Its been close to two months or more since this project was started. I'm glad to say that most of the tanks look really ok, and gladder to say that the 5 footer's eco-system is FINALLY stabalizing, and should be able to accept more fishes in day or two.

next up, all groups are welcome to feed your fishes with the meal worms, but you gotta inform either Evan Kong or me, Jerome Tan before doing so.

Also, it's the exam period, soon... so i'm not expecting any of u to read this...

What's going on for now...

Hmmm, seems like everyone is rather quiet here, which is rather unusual! Anyway, just to add a little to this blog since no one else seems to be writing... (those in charge of the blog for each grp, do get pp to blog... I'm sure there's lots of stuff to update!)

1. Starting next week (Term 4 Week 3), will be taking note of how each group maintains their tank. Main reason is to encourage you guys to clear up THROUGHLY after you all use the SRC (don't forget, things you leave lying around like the nets may be taken by others, so keep all things under the stairs or in the 3 ft tank cupboard), including rearranging the chairs you use, and cleaning up the puddles and all. Also, this involves regular feeding of the fish and topping up the water in the tanks (includes hospital tank), plus signing in when you feed the fish, and this also includes how willing you all are to help the other grps. So no cursing and sabo-ing other grps hor... The incentive? Best grp gets a lunch treat. :0)

2. We bought new medication for fish diseases. Pls remember that its not the more the merrier when it comes to treatment, cos dumping extra chemicals may stress the fish further, and disrupt your ecosystem (like killing the bacteria in the filter). So be specific and sparing when it comes to using medication... which means, take out your sick fish, hospitalise them in a Class A ward. Don't dump in medication for the ENTIRE tank... which is wasteful, unless all the fish are exhibiting the same symptoms.

3. Study hard for SA2 yah. All the best for your preparation!

Ok for those who r not "active", just let u all know that the three tanks are already set up with fishes... if u never turn up for the meeting on last friday, pls ask yr group leader wat they tok about and pls be "active".... i will be doing those "name card" but it only will be out after SA, cause i need to study... sry about it but once the "name card" is out, u can use it to draw the SRC key if Miss Lu is not free and its a pass for u to touch the tank when the parents helper ask about it so never lost it... if lost or found one, pls report to Gabriel at 2G at any time during recess...

Hey pp,
Since no one seems to be blogging for now, let me start you guys off. Do update the blog, esp with regards to how your tank is doing (how many deaths, what is going wrong, what you have learnt, what other plans you have etc). And if you do blog, please sign off yah!

Anyway, seems like Group 2's fishes are starting to flash (flipping to show the underside of their bellies)... So they are currently treating the fish. Group 1's archers are not doing too well... let's hope the tank stablises soon, meanwhile, undertakers, I hope you'll dispose of the bodies into the dustbin (not in the SRC, nor in the recycling bin, or the drain outside the SRC!). Group 3's tank seems quite stable... Those in charge of the blog from each group, you may want to put in more details!
